from plain to pretty: painting a mat for your art print
Share
Since moving into my new studio space, I've been in the decorating mood. My goal: make it feel extra homey with layers of subtle pattern, texture, and seasonal touches.

Autumn is such a great time to add in cozy elements, and framed art is one of the easiest ways to celebrate the season in a subtle way.
Of course, you can just pop a favorite art print into a frame (here are a bunch of frame suggestions!). But here's one more step you can do to take your store-bought frame and mat from plain to pretty by giving mat a makeover.
Here's what you'll need:

Frame: choose a frame with a mat opening the size of your artprint (in this case, an 8x10 opening). I used this frame. If your frame doesn't have a mat, you can purchase one individually.
Art print: so many good ones to choose from in my shop!
Watercolor paint: use a full set of colors or a tube of the color of your choice.
Brush: a size 0 brush is great for fine lines
Jar of water
STEP ONE: Remove the mat from the frame.

STEP TWO: paint pattern on the mat

There are so many pattern options! Use a scrap piece of watercolor paper to try out a few to see what you like best and decide what coordinates with your art print.
Skinny stripes, wide stripes, gingham, scallops, dots, simple florals, and windowpane patterns are all very fun ideas. I went with a diagonal plaid, painting three skinny lines going one direction and three skinny lines going the opposite direction.

I just freehanded the pattern and it is definitely imperfect! If you feel nervous about going straight to the painting part, feel free to lightly sketch your pattern first.
STEP THREE: pop the mat back into the frame and add the art print, securing with a small piece of masking tape.

STEP FOUR: hang your print and enjoy!

Isn't it fun?! It adds that subtle touch of pattern and charming personality with just a few supplies and a couple of minutes of painting. I do hope you try this!
